Introduction

In Mobilidata, we use intelligent traffic lights (iTLC, or intelligente verkeersregel installaties (iVRI) in Dutch) as successor of the more traditional and wide-spread traffic light controllers.

What is new to the iTLC? A traditional traffic light conroller is switching her lights according a fixed pattern, independend on the amount of traffic on the intersection. To improve that somewhat inefficient switch, and avoid periods of green for directions without any reason, detection loops have been added, in order to measure the amount of traffic.
iTLC is again a successor on that principle. the iTLC has the capability to receive and communicate infromation over the internet, so detecting traffic in an earlier and more efficient fashion, capable to steer on priority request and so on. The installation will provide light period estimations as well. In this way traffic can adjust speeds to create a more efficient flow, saving fuel and time.

The more vehicles sending position information to an iTLC, the better. The iTLC can then optimize its cycles to the most economic or best trafficflows.

info

Optimization and priority are not to be confused. Priority means asking priority over all/many other vehicles via a Service Request Message (SRM) such as for emergency/public transport vehicles: the approach from which emergency services arrive should be green while all/interfering other approaches become red to ensure a cleared intersection upon arrival. Whereas optimization means letting your presence be known via a Cooperative Awareness Message (CAM) and praying that the ITSApp is more favourable toward you as a result.
